Empowering Individuals & transforming communities by providing interest free

micro- loans

Human Empowerment and Welfare Team (HEWT) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization committed to reducing poverty and empowering underserved communities through sustainable financial support.

We follow a principle called Qarz-e-Hasana, which encourages providing interest-free loans to people in need.

Qarz-e-Hasana (means benevolent lending) is a concept of interest-free loans. It is based on the principle of helping others without expecting any financial gain. Therefore, it is a gratuitous loan extended to people in need, for a specified period. At the end of that period, the face value of the loan is to be paid off, even in small installments.

HEWT offers loans for a period of 1 year and after starting a home-based business, the beneficiary pays back this loan in equal small repayments. At the end of the year, the whole loan amount is paid off, and the beneficiary becomes independent through establishing his/her business.

Our approach focuses on enabling poor families to launch and build small businesses, empowering them to uplift themselves and create a continuous income for themselves.

Since the inception of HEWT, we have distributed thousands of loans with a 95% loan return rate across the globe, and we are working to bring our initiatives to other countries to expand our reach.

Our Story

From One Chapter to a Growing Movement

HEWT began as a small initiative with a profound belief: meaningful change does not always require vast resources.

Sometimes, it begins with a single opportunity.

When HEWT was founded in Karachi in 2012, its mission was straightforward yet ambitious— to alleviate poverty by providing interest-free microloans to women who possessed the determination to succeed but lacked access to financial institutions.

The organization's earliest beneficiaries reflected a common reality found across underserved communities. They possessed valuable skills but lacked startup capital.

Some were tailors.

Some raised poultry.

Others operated home-based kitchens, kiosks, repair shops, beauty services, or small agricultural enterprises.

What united them was not their profession but their determination.

HEWT believed in these women before traditional financial systems ever would.

The model proved remarkably effective.

Beneficiaries established businesses, generated income, repaid their loans, and returned for additional financing to expand their enterprises.

Many progressed through multiple loan cycles.

What began as a modest income-generating activity often evolved into a thriving family business capable of supporting multiple generations.

Over the years, these individual stories accumulated into something far greater than isolated successes.

They became a movement.

Today, HEWT operates through thirteen chapters across the four provinces of Pakistan, reaching communities in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Its vision has expanded beyond Pakistan, with programs extending into Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, laying the foundation for a truly global movement of human empowerment.

Thousands of families have benefited directly from HEWT's programs, while tens of thousands of individuals—including children, spouses, and extended family members—have experienced the ripple effects of increased income, improved education, enhanced health, and greater economic stability.

Every success story strengthens the organization's conviction that poverty can be alleviated one family at a time.
